Armenian president talks over Karabakh conflict with OSCE MG co-chairman

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan has recently received U.S co-chairman of the OSCE Minsk Group James Warlick, Armenia Today reported Sept. 17 citing the presidential press-service.

During the meeting, the sides discussed issues related to the current stage and prospects of the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Sargsyan and Warlick also exchanged views on the issues discussed at the trilateral meeting in Newport on September 4 upon the initiative of U.S Secretary of State.

Moreover, Warlick was received by Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian, the foreign ministry reported.

During the meeting the sides discussed a number of issues on the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement.

The two sides exchanged views on the issues raised during the meeting of the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan with the Secretary of State in Newport on September 4. The two sides also stressed the importance of the upcoming meeting of the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan in Paris on October, initiated by the French president.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four U.N. Security Council resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
