Armenians violate ceasefire with Azerbaijan over 70 times in a day

Armenian armed forces have broken the ceasefire with Azerbaijan 72 times in numerous positions in the last 24 hours, the Azerbaijani defense ministry said Jan. 6.

Armenian armed forces, located near the villages of Berkaber of Ijavan district, Dovekh of Noyemberyan district of Armenia, opened fire at the positions of Azerbaijani armed forces located in the villages of Qizilhajili and Kemerli of Gazakh district.

At the same time, Armenian armed forces, stationed in the villages of Chinari, Aygepar and the nameless heights of Armenia's Berd district, opened fire at the positions of Azerbaijani armed forces located in the villages of Kohanabi, Agbulag, Alibayli and Hajialili of Tovuz district.

Azerbaijani positions also underwent fire from the positions located in the villages of Geyarkh of Terter district, Tapgaragoyunlu of Goranboy district, Yusifjanli, Marzili, Kengerli, Shuraabad, Shikhlar, Novruzlu, Garagashli, Javakhirli, Sarijali, Bash Garvend of Aghdam district, Kuropatkino of Khojavand district, Horadiz, Ashagi Seyidahmadli of Fuzuli district.

Azerbaijani positions also underwent fire from the positions located at the nameless heights of Goygol, Goranboy, Khojavand, Fizuli and Jabrayil districts.

The opposing side was silenced with return fire.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
