Armenia violates ceasefire with Azerbaijan 40 times in a day

Over the past 24 hours, Armenian military 40 times violated the ceasefire on various parts of the contact line between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops, the Defense Ministry of Azerbaijan said Jan. 21.

Armenians stationed in the village of Paravakar of Armenia's Ijevan district opened fire on the Azerbaijani armed forces' positions located in the village of Kohneqishlaq of the Aqstafa district.

Armenians stationed in the village of Chinari of Armenia's Berd district opened fire on the Azerbaijani armed forces' positions located in the village of Kokhanebi of the Tovuz district.

Armenians stationed in the nameless heights of Armenia's Krasnoselsk district opened fire on the Azerbaijani armed forces' positions located in the nameless heights of the Gadabey district.

Azerbaijani armed forces were also fired at from the positions near the villages of Goyarkh, Chilyaburt of the Terter district, Tapqaraqoyunlu of the Goranboy district, Shikhlar, Yusifjanli, Sarijali, Shuraabad, Kengerli, Javakhirli, Qaraqashli of the Aghdam district, Horadiz, Ashagi Seyidahmadli, Ashagi Veyselli of the Fizuli district, Kuropatkino of the Khojavand district and Mehdili of the Jabrayil district.

Moreover, the Azerbaijani soldiers came under the Armenians' fire from the positions on the nameless heights in the Goranboy, Fizuli and Jabrayil districts.

The opposing side was silenced with return fire.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
