Currently, Armenian armed forces continue shelling the settlements in Azerbaijan's Terter district, the head of the district's executive power, Mustagim Mammadov told Trend May 13.
He said Armenians are shelling the Gazyan village of the district using artillery.
"The shelling continues," he said, adding that the shells have fallen on planting areas.
Armenia's armed forces began shelling the Azerbaijani village using the 120 mm mortars at 18:20 (UTC/GMT +4 hours) May 13, according to a message from the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry.
"Azerbaijani armed forces are carrying out operations in accordance with the current situation and striking back," said the ministry.
"Armenia's criminal military and political leadership is fully responsible for further developments that may occur as a result of such provocations," noted the ministry.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
