Baku, Azerbaijan, Jan. 16

Trend:

Armenia has used large-caliber heavy weapons in order to escalate the situation on the frontline between Armenian and Azerbaijani troops, the country’s Defense Ministry said in a message Jan. 16.

Since the evening of Jan. 15, Armenian Armed Forces have shelled the Azerbaijani army positions using 60-mm, 82-mm and 120-mm mortars, the message said.

There are no casualties among the Azerbaijani servicemen, according to the message.

Azerbaijani Armed Forces took the appropriate measures to suppress Armenia’s actions, Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry noted.

Azerbaijani Armed Forces fully control the situation on the frontline, the defense ministry added.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
