Baku, Azerbaijan, Dec. 17

Trend:

The Swiss mobile operator "Swisscom" has ceased cooperation with "Karabakh Telecom", which carries out illegal activities on the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, the embassy of Azerbaijan in Switzerland told Trend Dec. 18.

As a result of intervention of the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Switzerland, "Swisscom" company suspended its roaming agreement with "Karabakh Telecom".

The Swiss Foreign Ministry, in turn, said that it had no information on the "Swisscom" roaming agreement with the illegally functioning "Karabakh Telecom" and learned about this only after the appeal of the Azerbaijani embassy.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
