By Leman Zeynalova - Trend:

Peace in the South Caucasus is possible after the withdrawal of Armenian troops from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, Ph.D. in History Guram Markhulia said in an interview with Azernews, Trend reports.

Markhuliya believes that Armenia will make the right decision and leave the occupied lands of Azerbaijan, and peace will prevail in the South Caucasus.

As for the statement of Armenian Defense Minister David Tonoyan about the possibility of moving military operations to the territory of Azerbaijan, the Georgian expert noted that the diversity of communicative forms of manipulation and numerous language manifestations of the "militant" leaders of Armenia lead to ironic laughter, and in his opinion, this speech strategy first of all, is aimed at calming Armenian population and nothing more.

According to Markhulia, who also touched upon the recent Moscow meeting of the foreign ministers of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia, it was an ordinary meeting and no one expected this meeting to lead to any progress in the settlement of the conflict.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
