The servicemen of the State Border Service (SBS) of Azerbaijan prevented the organized armed group engaged in drug smuggling from crossing the republic's border from Iran, the State Border Service said.

Five armed men with cargo illegally crossed the border of the republic from Iran in the frontier village of Shahriyar of Bilasuvar region at 04:00.

As a result of firefight five offenders returned to Iran, one of them was wounded.

During the examination of the scene 66 kilograms of heavy narcotic - opium were found in three trunks.

In addition, three people who tried to escape during the arrest were found in a car hidden behind technical constructions of the same frontier. The arrested were brought to the frontier and during the initial investigation, it was found that all three of them are citizens of Azerbaijan, residents of Bilasuvar - Jafar Veliyev (born 1977), Mailov Rahib (1980), Tagiyev Sabuhi (1983) and they were ready to take drugs, which were brought from Iran.

SBS continues to investigative measures to bring the other members of the gang to justice.
