Mass murder which took place in Kazakh Ile-Alatau National Park in August was committed by religious extremists, Novosti-Kazakhstan reported with the reference to the Kazakh Interior Ministry.

"There is a good basis due to the conducted investigation to argue that the crime was committed by the group of people adherent to religious extremism. Their identities have been established," the Ministry said.

Eleven people were found killed in the Aksai Gorge on Aug.13-14. Later one more victim was found at the scene. They all died from multiple stab wounds. Well-known forest ranger Panayot Zaharopulo, his family members and employees of the park are among the dead. Another ranger of the Ile-Alatau National Park Aleksei Shkilev has been arrested over the criminal case on the incident.

According to investigators, the criminal group regularly changed a place of residence. At last some group members were killed by spontaneous explosion in a house in Tausamal village of Kazakh Almaty region and some extremists were eliminated within special operation in Baganashil village. The remaining members of the group were officially wanted by law enforcement bodies.
