At least 220 people were killed in clashes between the Free Syrian Army and government forces over the past 24 hours in the country's different cities, "Al Jazeera" TV channel reported on Friday.

Most of the dead are residents of the city of Damascus, Homs and Aleppo.

Earlier "Al Arabiya" TV channel reported that the resistance forces took control over most of Aleppo. The Free Syrian Army took Tel Abyad border checkpoint located on the border with Turkey under complete control.

Anti-government protests have continued in Syria for a year and half.

According to UN, the total number of victims of the conflict in Syria is nearing 20,000.
More than 230,000 have become refugees with around three million in need of humanitarian assistance. The Syrian authorities say they oppose the well-armed militants.
