Turkey's outlawed leftwing radical group Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C) claimed responsibility on Saturday for a suicide attack on the US embassy in Ankara, dpa reported

Turkish authorities said DHKP-C member Ecevit Sanli used six kilogrammes of TNT and a hand grenade in his attack on Friday, which also killed an embassy guard.

The DHKP-C website said Sanli had committed a act of "self-sacrifice" on behalf of the group.

Sanli had spent five years in prison for alleged involvement in an attack on security facilities in Istanbul, Turkish officials said.

He was released in 2002 after being diagnosed with a brain disorder caused by a hunger strike, and fled the country. It is unclear when he returned to Turkey, but he is believed to have lived in Germany during his absence.

The DHKP-C has carried out attacks in Turkey since the 1970s with the goal of overthrowing the Turkish government and installing a Marxist regime.
