54 people detained & extradited to Azerbaijan on base of 155 petitions in 2005

54 wanted people were detained and extradited to the Azerbaijani investigative bodies on the base of petitions raised before the CIS countries in 2005, Trend reports referring to Ruslan Hajiyev, the head of the International Relations Department of the Azerbaijani Prosecutor Generals Office.

Investigation on address in relation to extradition of people, committed crimes in Azerbaijan and hided in the CIS countries requires much time. In accordance with appropriate items of the International Conventions, additional documents are required from Azerbaijan to determine whether the people are persecuted on political motives or not. Major problem in their extradition to Azerbaijan is related to accepting of foreign citizenship by them, Hajiyev stressed.

According to Hajiyev, these people illegally became citizens of other country. In such cases the Azerbaijani law-enforcement bodies raise repeated petition before the CIS countries to clarify the issue.

The most of addresses is to Russia, as majority of the people committed crimes fled to Russia. The number of addresses to other CIS countries is limited.
