Opposition Parties to Submit to Government and Venice Commission New Proposals on Election Code

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr Trend S.Ilhamgizi / The consultative union of opposition parties will develop and submit to the Government and the Venice Commission new proposals on the Election Code, Sardar Jalaloglu, the chairman of the Azerbaijan Democratic Party (ADP), part of the consultative union "Alitilar" (Six) said in talks with Trend.

A meeting held on 25 September with participation of the ADP, Azerbaijan National Independence Party (ANIP), the Azerbaijan Social Democratic Party (ASDP), Tereggi and Musavat parties decided to develop draft proposals on election legislation.

These six parties propose to form election commissions on a parity basis between representatives from the authorities and the opposition. A decision on the election commission should be adopted on the principle 50+1, i.e. voting.

Moreover, an additional item should be included in legislation regarding the repeated calculation of votes. "In the case of appeals on falsifications made in any poling stations, the repeated calculation of votes should be held here with the participation of the applicants," Jalaloglu said.

The parties propose to restore proportional election systems in Azerbaijan.

A document containing these and other proposals will be discussed in October jointly by the opposition parties. Later proposals will be submitted to the Government and the Venice Commission.
