Azerbaijan Has no Obvious Progress on some Issues: PACE Co-rapporteur

Azerbaijan, Baku / cor Trend K.Ramazanova / No obvious progress is observed in the issue related to freedom of word, prosecution of journalists and political prisoners in Azerbaijan, Andreas Herkel, a Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) co-rapporteur on Azerbaijan, said in a telephone talk from Strasbourg on 2 October.

"Unfortunately, no progress is observed in the activities of the working group on political prisoners and I am going to raise this issue at a meeting with Speaker Oktay Asadov," Herkel said.

The PACE Monitoring Committee mainly discusses freedom of word, prosecution of journalists and political prisoners in Azerbaijan.

"There is an idea on appointment of a rapporteur on political prisoners not only on Azerbaijan, but other countries as well," Herkel added.

The previous session focused on the same issues, as well as changes to the Elections Code of Azerbaijan.
