Election Commission Members Should be Elected during Lawyers Meeting: Vahdat Party Chairman

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. S.Ilhamgizi / The Vahdat Party proposes to form a composition of election commissions from independent lawyers, Tair Karimli, the chairman of the party, said.

The composition of Azerbaijani election commissions consisting of 18 people; member of parties represented in Parliament, as well as independent MPs. Azerbaijani opposition parties demand the composition of election commissions on a parity bases.

Karimli considers it impossible to form election commissions on a parity bases.

Azerbaijani opposition parties have decided not to participate in the Parliamentary elections if the parity system is not used. Musavat, Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan and Citizen Development Party broke the agreement and even took part in Parliament.

Vahdat proposes to increase the number of election commission members from 18 to 21. The party also considers the possible restoration of a proportional election system.

Vahdat proposes to guarantee the election rights of Azerbaijanis residing abroad and foreigners residing in Azerbaijan. Foreigners have the right to vote in Azerbaijan. However, in compliance with the Constitution only Azerbaijani citizen have the right to vote, Karimli said.

Vahdat was in the opposition in 2006. The party is headed by the former chairman of Azerbaijan's Supreme Court, ex-MP Tahir Karimli, who supports the authorities' political course.
