Azerbaijan, Baku /corr. Trend Y.Aliyev / The new Shahtakhti-Plodyasht bridge was opened on 17 October in Nakchivan Autonomous Republic near the Azerbaijani-Iran border over the Araz River. The bridge has been constructed in compliance to a 2003 Azerbaijani-Iranian memorandum envisaging the opening checkpoint Shahtakhti ( Azerbaijan) and Plodyasht ( Iran).
The opening ceremony was attended by the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev and the Vice President of Iran, Parviz Davudi. The Azerbaijani Leader stated that this bridge will not only be a new transport link, but will connect the Azerbaijani and Iranian people. The Vice President of Iran said that the bridge will serve as the development of trade relations between the two countries.
Aliyev crossed the border and got familiarized with the preparation works of the Iranian side for opening the checkpoint.
In August during Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejat's official visit to Azerbaijan, a bilateral agreement was signed to give international status to Shahtakhti-Plodyasht checkpoint. Currently the sides are agreeing upon the working plans for the checkpoint which will be opened soon.
