Construction of Airport in Igdir to Expand Azerbaijani-Turkish Relations – Municipality’s Head

Turkey, Igdir / Trend corr. I.Gasimli / Construction of the airport in Igdir, Turkey in frontier with Azerbaijan to be restored from May 2008. "Construction of the airport will positively affect on Azerbaijani-Turkish relations," Nuraddin Aras, the head of Igdir municipality, said to the Trend Agency on 30 October.

Construction of the airport in Azerbaijani territory was commenced in 1995. However, construction work was suspended due to shortage of funds.

During the visit to Azerbaijan Aras asked the Azerbaijani President, Ilham Aliyev, to render assistance in construction of the airport in 2006. The decision to allocate budget for construction of the airport was made after the meeting of the Azerbaijani President with Rajab Tayyip Erdogan the Prime Minister of Turkey.

"Support of the project by the Azerbaijani President positively promoted to restore construction of the airport," Aras said.

Aras said the residents of Igdir use of the Kars, Arzrum or Agri airports.

"Construction of the airport in Igdir will prevent waste of time and promote development of economy of both countries. Opening of the airport will enable to implement direct flights to Baku and Ganja, as well as cause increase of turn over," Aras said.
