Azerbaijan’s Ministry of National Security Detains Armed Group Having Links with ‘Al Kaida’ and ‘Al Cihad’ International Terrorist Organizations

Azerbaijan, Baku /corr. Trend E.Huseynli / The Ministry of National Security of Azerbaijan carried out a special operation plan to timely prevent the radical acts of vahabists. It was made clear during the operations that a person nicknamed 'Abu Jafar', Arab by nation, who have links with the international terrorist organizations such as 'Al Kaida' and 'Al Cihad', and others came to Azerbaijan and established an armed group from the persons who formerly participated in the illegal military units in separate conflict zones and radical vahabists, the Ministry's Public Relations Department reported on 6 November. During the joint measures of the law-enforcement bodies on 26 September in Azerbaijan's district of Gusar, one of the group's members, resident of Gusar district, Abdullayev Telman, born in 1975, put up armed resistance and wounded two policemen with the fire-arm and could run from the place of incident. In addition, other members of the group, Vidadi Kerimov, Adil Jaraykhanov, Vitali Agamammadov, Asaf Nazarov and Danial Abuyev, were detained. It was made clear that 'Abu Jafar' is planned to be removed from Azerbaijan through the secret way.

Rafael Rahimov's home in Azerbaijan's city of Sumgayt where 'Abu Jafar' was hidden was determined and taken under control. As a result of operation on 10 October, Rahimov and resident of Sumgayt, Elchin Almirzayev, who was known as 'Abdul Malik' and 'Haji' amongst the group members, have been detained, but 'Abu Jafar' put up armed resistance and could run from the place of incident.

The search measures were continued to detain 'Abu Jafar'. The new address where 'Abu Jafar' was hiding was determined and it was made clear that he is under defense of other two armed members of the group. As a result of special operations on 2-3 November, 'Abu Jafar' and other members of the group, Mirza Babayev, Gadir Hajiyev, Vugar Aliyev, Emin Cami, Logman Muradov, Habil Masmaliyev and Parviz Karimov, were detained. During the operation, 'Abu Jafar' made an attempt to put up armed resistance, but due to the witty measures of Security Ministry's 'Gartal' Special Team, 'Abu Jafar' was detained without damage. Generally one machine-gun, three pistols, one rifle, 12 grenades, 1 kg 75g trotyl and other equipments have been taken from the members of the group.

The Ministry's Head Investigation Department has filed a criminal case in compliance with the articles 279.2 (armed group not specified in the law), 315.2 (resistance or force against government representative), 228.2.1 (illegally acquiring, transferring, keeping, delivering and hiding fire arms, explosive substances and equipment) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan. Search operations are continuing to determine and detain all participants of the group members.
