Representatives of International Organizations Reply to Boycotting   Azerbaijan Opposition

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr Trend S.Ilamgizi / The international organizations, inkling the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe and IFES, who are organizers of the conference on changes to the Elections Code have indirectly voiced their opinion on passing upon of four opposition parties from participating in the discussions.

The Popular Front of Azerbaijan Party (PFAP), the Democratic Party of Azerbaijan, the Liberal Party and Musavat Party do not participate in the discussions, protesting the organizer of the event IFES and participation of the many parities in the forum. The political parties consider that IFES has lost confidence of democratic parties with its attitude towards the elections, held in Azerbaijan. 'Four' also proposed to discuss the Elections Code only with them on behalf of the opposition, because they passed 1%-barrier on the results of last parliamentary elections.

In their addressees Sergey Kuznetsov, a representative of the Venice Commission, Daniel Blessington, IFES Director for Azerbaijan, Khose Louise Herrero, the head of the Baku Office of the OSCE, did not name the parties, but hinted in their protest.

Kuznetsov said that these international organizations have been cooperation a long. 'Take it into consideration," he said.

Blessington said that IFES made all possible to attract the political parties to the reformation of the elections Code.

Herrero said that the international organizations in Azerbaijan are not interested in interior policy. "We are not participants of the interior political rivalry. We only try to see election fair. Discussions on the elections Code should be held with participation of many sides. I invite t he forces interested in the elections to participate in the elections. Serious attention should be paid to it," he added. Herrero said that the involvement of the forces interested in the elections, is necessary for ensuring people's confidence on the elections process.
