Azerbaijan Government to Consider Every Proposal on Changes to Elections Code: Azerbaijani Senior State Official (video)

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr Trend K.Ramazanova / The Azerbaijan Government will take into consoderaion every proposal regarding the changes to the Elections Code, Ali Hassanov, the head of the Public and Political Department at the Azerbaijani President's Administration, said on 9 November.

"If additional elections and changes to the Code ensure the democratic and fair elections, the Government is prepared to adopt these proposals," Hassanov stressed.

A conference was organized by IFES, the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe and the Central Elections Commission of Azerbaijan in Baku on 7 November to discuss the changes to the Elections Code of Azerbaijan. Attending the discussions are representatives from the opposition parties, HGOs, the Central Elections Commission and Azerbaijan and the authorities. The discussion will be over on 9 November.

Hasanov said that the elections institutes of Azerbaijan should be independent from the will of any political party. "Unfortunately, since 1998 the elections institutes have been politicized gradually. Models and proposals presented to the society form the elections commissions depending in the wil of the political forces," Hassanov stressed.

He believes that after the discussions over the changes to the Elections Code representatives form the opposition and authorities will come to a common agreement.

Next presidential elections in Azerbaijan will be held on 15 October 2008.
