Former Azerbaijani President Will Not Join Presidential Elections

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr Trend S.Ilhamgizi / Ayaz Mutallibov, the former Azerbaijani President and the leader of the Azerbaijan Social Democracy Party (ASDP) will not participate in the upcoming presidential elections, unless necessary facilities are offered for his returning to Azerbaijan, Araz Alazade, the co-chairman of SDPA said.

"Mutallibov is unwilling to nominate his candidacy in the next presidential elections unless necessary conditionsare offered for his return to Azerbaijan," Alizade said.

The next Azerbaijan presidential elections will be held on 15 October 2008.

According to Alizade, ASDP will participate in the presidential elections and the candidate of the party will be determined during the next conference of the party to be held in spring of 2008.

SDPA is a left-centrist party of Azerbaijan. Mutallibov and Araz Alizade are the co-chairmen of the party. SDPA is a member of the International Socialist International. Mutallibov was elected the first President of the independent Azerbaijan. He left the country after accession of the Popular Front Movement and is currently residing in Russia.

The former President is on the international search on the basis of accusations by the Azerbaijani Prosecutor General's Office. Mutallibov is accused of attempting a coup-d'etat, establishment of illegal armed groups, capturing the state power by force and other serious crimes.
