Registered Azerbaijani Candidate for Presidential Elections in Georgia

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. S.Ilhamgizi / The Central Election Committee of Georgia registered the candidature of the Azerbaijani Fazil Aliyev to participate in the forthcoming presidential elections. The presidential election was scheduled for 5 January 2008, the Election Centre reported to Trend Agency on 26 November.

Aliyev has formed staffing for the election and will launch a pre-election campaign. Aliyev hopes to receive votes from Azerbaijanis living in Georgia.

The non-official resources reported that about 500,000 Azerbaijanis reside in Georgia and made up 20% of the population. The number of Azerbaijanis with the right to vote made up 500,000.

Seven candidates for the presidential post were registered in Georgia.

Aliyev became the first Azerbaijani who nominated his candidature for the presidential post. Aliyev was born in Tbilisi and completed his education at the Tbilisi secondary School 71.

In 1984 Aliyev graduated from the Azerbaijani State Teacher's Training College. From 1986 to 1988 he worked as a trainer at the Balakan region school named I. Nasimi.

Aliyev was one of the active participants of the national-liberation movement of Georgia in 1988.

Since 1990 to 1991 had been the mayor of the Gardabani region and the deputy head of Gardabani region in 1992. In 2003 he was elected MP of the Georgian Parliament.

Aliyev was elected as chairman of the International Council of Georgian Azerbaijanis in 2006. The National Assembly of Georgian Azerbaijanis and International Council of Georgian Azerbaijanis nominated Aliyev's candidature. .
