Azerbaijani Opposition Bloc Considers Participation in Presidential Election as Unacceptable

Azerbaijan, Baku, 9 January / Trend corr. S.Ilhamgizi / The Azadlig bloc, which unites the three opposition parties, does not agree with the proposal made by the opposition concerning the participation in the upcoming presidential election, in October 2008. Ali Aliyev, the co-chairman of the bloc, stated to Trend agency that the structure would not take a decision concerning participation in the presidential election before May or July.

Eldar Namazov, the head of the Forum For Azerbaijan, proposes the opposition to take part in the elections, hold meetings with the people, form its platform and gain the support of the people

According to Aliyev, Azadlig will not take part in the presidential election, if no democratic election condition will be created, as well as no changes will be made in the composition of election commissions and there is a complete provision for the freedom of speech. "Therefore, because of the various reasons we do not consider the participation in the election, as acceptable," Aliyev said. Azadlig will take waiting position till summer, observing the political situation in the country.

Azadlig unites the three opposition parties: Popular Front, Liberal and Citizen and the Development. The presidential election in Azerbaijan is scheduled on 15 October 2008.
