Tehran Meeting of Caspian’s Legal Status Postponed

Azerbaijan, Baku, 24 January /corr. Trend S.Agayeva / The next meeting of the working group of Caspian countries to determine the Caspian's legal status has been postponed from January to April, a source stated at Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry.

The meeting will take place at the level of the Deputy Foreign Ministers of the Caspian littoral countries. They should continue work on the project of Convention on Legal Status of the Caspian Sea.

In November 2003 the Caspian States signed a Framework Convention on the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea. In July 1998 Kazakhstan and Russia signed an agreement on the delimitation of the northern part of the Caspian Sea, and in 2002 a protocol to the agreement was determined.

In 2001 and 2003 Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan signed an agreement on delimitation of the Caspian Sea as well as a protocol to the agreement. In May 2003 Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Russia signed an agreement on the bordering lines of the Caspian Sea.

Azerbaijan will be represented at the meeting by the Deputy Foreign Minister, Khalaf Khalafov.
