Azerbaijan, Baku, 29 January / corr. Trend D. Khatinoglu/ Iran's uranium enrichment plans are not efficient from an economic standpoint. "The inefficient finance allocated by Iran to the nuclear energy should be spent on oil and gas projects," Ahmad Shirzad, the former MP of Iranian Parliament and the expert on nuclear issues said.

Russia has sold Iran the next lot of nuclear fuel, the Iranian agency IRNA reported on 28 January. Moscow says that the station Bushehr which Russia supplied with 82 tons nuclear fuel will not be operational until 2009.

According to IRNA, Manuchehr Mottaki, the foreign minister of Iran has announced on 28 January that the official Tehran issued a tender on the construction of eight more stations.

" Iran has allocated a minimum of $4 bln to the Bushehr nuclear station. The installation of nuclear stations in Iran as an energy source is not efficient from the economic standpoint. Iran possesses oil and gas fields, however all the projects in this sphere are not yet completed and these underground energy resources are not used in the correct way. In such a situation there is no point in striving for nuclear energy," the expert Shirzad said to Trend in a telephone interview.

According to Shirzad, Iran should obtain enriched uranium with the help of either Russia or the consortium organized in France. The enrichment of uranium in Iran will lead to more severe sanctions against the country.

The permanent members of the UN Security Council decided to adopt Resolution 3 with regards to Iran in the meeting of the Council held in Berlin on 22 January. According to IRNA, Mottaki has announced that these sanctions will be met by the strong reaction of Teheran.

Iran can accelerate the installation of the centrifuges in the nuclear stations or it can have a depreciating attitude to the resolutions. "I don't believe that Iran can do anything more than that. A strong blow has been dealt to Iran due to the nuclear issues. By ending the uranium enrichment, Teheran can produce a good image in the opinion of the international community. The main issue is that Teheran can make positive steps to liquidate the resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council against it," Shirzad said.

The UN Security Council has adopted two resolutions against Iran on the uranium enrichment and the draft of the third one is currently being discussed.
