Large Amount of Drugs Found in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku, 13 February / Trend corr E. Huseynli / A large amount of drugs was found in the town of Khirdalan located 20km from Baku, the Azerbaijani Interior Ministry said to Trend.

On 12 February, the Anti-Drugs Department at the Baku Police Administration confiscated 2.134kg of opium from Elchin Mammadov, a Khirdalan resident, which he was attempting to sell.

An investigation was launched into the case.

Last year police seized some 337kg of illegal drugs and 140kg was prevented from distribution.

A total of 1,892 (92.3%) out of 2,049 people who were detained for drug possession or sale are able to work, but neither work or study, 597 (29.1%) people have previous convictions, 71 (3.5%) are women, and four are juveniles.
