Azerbaijan Opposition Should Change Struggle Philosophy – Azerbaijani United Intelligentsia Organization Chairman

Azerbaijan, Baku, 14 February / Trend corr. J.Babayeva / The Azerbaijani opposition should change its philosophy of struggle and employ original methods of protesting, Eldaniz Guliyev, the chairman of the United Intelligentsia of Azerbaijan, stated to Trend.

"Mass actions are one of the forms of protestation. However, there is no sincerity shown in constant calls for mass demonstrations by the opposition. Therefore, the majority of the public do not trust the opposition parties," Guliyev said. If the public do not trust the opposition, then it will be difficult to hold mass rallies.

"Today the key issue is for the public to re-gain its trust of the opposition parties," Guliyev noted. To do this the Azerbaijani opposition parties should use the original rally experience from European countries. "Some parties demonstrate their protest by standing in front of the entrance of Old City (Ichari Shahar) and announcing a five-minute silence while others quietly demonstrate along the streets. In addition, party members walk arm-in-arm in a procession from Baku to Shamakha to express their protest," Guliyev said.

Opposition members, who accuse each other of failing to stage mass rallies do not demonstrate any effort to stage such rallies themselves.

The target of United Intelligentsia of Azerbaijan, registered in 2007, is to protect the rights of the intelligentsia of the country and reach an agreement between the authorities and the opposition parties.
