Azerbaijani Pro Islamic Political Parties May Unite on Threshold of Presidential Elections
Azerbaijan, Baku, 11 March / Trend corr. I.Alizadeh / Pro Islamic political parties of Azerbaijan held negotiations for participation in the presidential elections as a bloc with one candidate.
"Today, several pro Islamic parties held discussions in connection to participation in the elections as a bloc," Akif Heydarli, a spokesperson from the Islamic Party of Azerbaijan (IPA), stated to Trend .
There are several pro Islamic parties in Azerbaijan. IPA is the most popular. IPA was founded in the early 1990s, and received State registration in 1992. In 1995, the party leadership was arrested and accused of parricide. The party's registration was canceled.
Heydarli said that pro Islamic parties participated as a bloc during previous elections. Presently, The Unity of pro Azerbaijani Forces together with the IPA unites Birlik and Dirchalish pro Islamic parties. Negotiations are being held with the Fazilat party in connection to participation in the upcoming presidential elections.
Discussions are on going and there has been no final decision yet, Heydarli said.
