According to media reports, on 13 March, Iranian artillery fired shells at the positions of KLP located in Gandil mountain in the north of Iraq. The news was confirmed by the website of the Patriotic Party of Kurdistan.
Lajevardi said that rumors about Iran's launching a new war are often exaggerated in mass media. " Iran carried out the military operations to demonstrate its power to the world and determination for the military operations outside its boundaries, but these operations will not be continued," Lajevardi, the chairman of the Association of Researchers of Iran said on a telephone from Paris.
Ahmad Tagi, the Iranian political scientist said that Iran, demonstrating Baghdad its power, wants to strengthen its position in Turkey. "Bombing at KLP positions by Iran, prior to the elections, is not a coincidence," Tagi, the director of Center for Strategic Studies of Karkuk and political scientist said to Trend from Karkuk on a telephone.
"Such a step by Iran in pre-election period is necessitated by the Irani government's wish to demonstrate its population what it is able to do," the political scientist said.
Fahim Tashtekin, the expert of Turkish newspaper Radical said that Iran by firing shells at KLP positions in north of Iraq, demonstrates Baghdad and world its power. " Iran by bombing Gandil wants to demonstrate Turkey that Iran's position regarding the issue of KLP coincides with that of Turkey," Tashtekin said to Trend on a telephone from Istanbul on 14 March. He said that bombing of KLP positions is of a symbolic character.
Iranian army had fired shells at KLP positions in north of Iraq in 2007 as well.
KLP terrorists have been holding military struggle to establish an independent Kurd state in the south-west of Turkey since 1984. According to the media, the number of killed as a result of military operations reaches nearly 37,000.
