Azerbaijan, Baku, 1 April / Trend corr. A.Maharramli / The next meting of PACE Subcommittee on Nagorno-Karabakh issue will be held in Strasburg at the end of June, Agnieszka Nachilo, PACE Committee Secretary on Political Issues, stated to Trend on 1 April.

PACE adopted resolution 1416 in January 2005 concerning the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The resolution states that Armenia has occupied Azerbaijani land and proposals were made on the regulation of the conflict. The subcommittee has been established to exercise control over the implementation of the Resolution. Lord Russell Johnston, a British MP, is the chairman of the PACE Subcommittee on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

"The situation regarding the regulation of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, the negotiation process and results of the latest visit of Subcommittee head to the region will be discussed during the meeting," he said.

The meeting within the framework of activity of Subcommittee on Nagorno Karabakh with the participation of MPs representing Azerbaijan and Armenia was planned during the spring session of PACE on 18 April. However, the meeting date was postponed in connection with the presidential elections which were held in Armenia. The decision to postpone the date of meeting was made during the visit of the head of the Subcommittee on 8 and 9 February.

The conflict between the two countries of the South Caucasus began in 1988 due to Armenian territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Since 1992, Armenian Armed Forces have occupied 20% of Azerbaijan including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and its seven surrounding districts. In 1994, Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement at which time active hostilities ended. The Co-Chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group ( Russia, France, and the US) are currently holding peaceful negotiations.
