Azerbaijani National Independent Party not to Boycott Presidential Elections – Leader of Party

Azerbaijan, Baku, 2 April / Trend corr. S.Ilhamgizi / The opposition Azerbaijani National Independent Party (ANIP) will not boycott the upcoming presidential elections.

"ANIP political course does not envisages boycotting the elections," Etibar Mammadov, ANIP leader said to Trend .

The next meeting of ANIP will be held on 20 April. Mammadov said the party would define its position about participation in the elections during the meeting. The presidential elections will be held in Azerbaijan in October 2008.

The Azadlig bloc, that unites three opposition parties, Liberal, Popular Front and Citizen and Development, stated that if no democratic conditions will be created in the country it would boycott the upcoming presidential elections.

ANIP leader said his party would not boycott the elections. "Boycott is not a way out of the situation. I consider that political parties should participate in all political processes in the country including the presidential elections," Mammadov said.

According to him, the meeting will define the participation format of ANIP in the presidential elections and its candidature.

Mammadov did not detail nomination of his candidature for the presidential post.

ANIP was the first party that received registration in Azerbaijan in 1992. Etibar Mammadov had been the founder and chairman of the party till 2004. At present, Mammadov is the deputy chairman of International Democratic Alliance.
