Azerbaijan, Baku, 9 April / corr. Trend I. Alizade/ The Topographic Committee under the Azerbaijani parliament has decided to rename Ali Bayramli, one of the four big cities of Azerbaijan. The Commission discussed this issue on 9 April.
The commission recommended renaming Ali Bayramli to Shirvan. This issue is expected to be brought for discussion in Milli Majlis (Azerbaijani parliament).
The residents of Ali Bayramli and City Administration appealed the Commission to rename the city to Shirvan, said Budag Budagov, the chairman of Topographic Committee.
According to MP Azay Guliyev, the city was founded in 1931 and was named after Ali Bayramov, who worked very hard to establish soviet regime in Azerbaijan. "Ali Bayramov acted contrary to independence of Azerbaijan and took an active part in collapse of Azerbaijani Republic. Therefore, the city must be renamed," he said.
According to MP, some 15,000 residents took part in the discussions. They proposed several names; however, the preference was given to Shirvan.
Nizami Khudiyev, the member of the Committee, protested against the negative statements about Ali Bayramov. He said that he does not support the renaming of Ali Bayramli to Shirvan. "I am sorry that the MP who carries the flag of sovereign Azerbaijan on his chest says such words about Ali Bayramli," he said.
"Ali Bayramov played a big role in collapse of independent state in Azerbaijan," said MP Gultakin Hajiyeva.
Teymur Bunyadov, the member of Committee, also protested against the renaming of the city.
The Committee has also discussed the renaming of Khanlar district of Azerbaijan. The residents and City Administration has appealed the Committee to rename the district into Goy-Goy and other Committee recommended renaming it Javadjan.
It was also proposed to rename Tartarli village of Goranboy district to Ashagi Safikurd.
