(dpa) - Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right coalition was leading in Italy's general election, according to initial exit polls published by Italian broadcaster Sky Italia.
The polls, based on a representative sample of voters questioned soon after they left polling stations, gave Berlusconi a total of 42 per cent, compared with 40 per cent for Walter Veltroni's Democratic Party.
