Preliminary Agreement on Unification of Two Opposition Parties Passed

Azerbaijan, Baku, 16 April / Trend corr. J.Babayeva / A preliminary agreement on unification of opposition parties - National Democratic Party of Azerbaijan (NDPA) and Azadlig party, was passed, Ahmad Oruj, chairman of Azadlig, stated Trend . Iskandar Hamidov, NDPA former chairman, supports the unification of these two parties.

Hamidov resigned from the chairman position and stated that he was going to leave the policy. While explaining this decision, he said that he want to pave way for the younger generation.

NDPA and Azadlig are presented in the Union for Democracy and Democratic Election Centre.

According to Oruj, there will not be many serious problems to unite these parties. "The main issue after unification will be the principles of the party activity," he said.

The new united party will support one candidate for the presidential position from the Union for Democracy.

Ogtai Khalilli, Chairman of NDPA Organizing Committee, stated Trend that some members of Azadlig opposed the unification of parties during the meeting.

"The final decision on unification of parties will be made during the Supreme Assembly of NDPA on 15 May," Khalilli stated.

NDPA's decision concerning the upcoming presidential elections will be made during the next meeting or Supreme Assembly of the party.
