Czechia Interested in Cooperation within GUAM

Azerbaijan, Baku, 16 April / Trend corr S. Agayeva/ GUAM-Czechia National Coordinators are expected to meet in Prague.

" Azerbaijan and the Czech Republic, as the countries presiding over GUAM and Vishegradsk Group, are interested in cooperation between the two organizations. Therefore, mutual cooperation will be discussed in Prague in the second half of May during the visit of Araz Azimov, Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister and Azerbaijan's National Coordinator in GUAM, to the Czech Republic," Tahir Tagizade, Azerbaijani Ambassador to the Czech Republic, reported from Prague on 16 April.

Azerbaijan and Czechia will preside over GUAM and Vishegradsk Group till June.

Four post-Soviet republics; Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova, established the GUAM format in 1997 during a summit of presidents of European Union countries in Strasburg. In 1999, Uzbekistan joined the organization but left four years later. In 2006, at the first summit of the organization in Kiev a decision was made to announce GUAM as an international organization with a new name; Organization for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM.

The Vishegradsk Group was founded in February 1991 to provide mutual help among its three members - Hungary, Poland and Czechoslovakia - while integrating into European and Euro-Atlantic structures. The Vishegradsk Group has included four members since the collapse of Czechoslovakia.

Czechia is also interested in cooperation within the framework of Friendship Group of GUAM in the European Union that was initiated by the President of Lithuania
