Azerbaijan Takes Important Strategic Position in Region – Head of Israeli Parliamentary Opposition

Israel, Jerusalem, 17 April / Trend corr R. Abdullayev/ Azerbaijan has taken an important strategic position in the region and at the same time is facing and is expected to face complicated geopolitical zigzags in the region, Binyamin Netanyahu, head of Israel's Likud party, said at press conference in Jerusalem.

Regarding Azerbaijan's role in the complicated regional situation on Iran's nuclear program, Netanyahu said that he had discussed the issue in 1998 with ex-President Heydar Aliyev during his short visit to Baku as Israeli Prime Minister.

" Iran endangers not only Israel but the entire world. Until today, the 'nuclear club' has not had a country of which the head follows fundamental radical ideology. Nuclear weapons are usually considered to be a 'deterrent', but in fact it is never practiced against the enemy. However, as for Iran, this statement may turn out to be questionable," Netanyahu said.

According to the head of Likud, Iran's nuclear program may put weapons of mass destruction into the hands of radical Islamists. "That was the very problem I discussed and analyzed with the late Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev during my short but fruitful visit to Azerbaijan," he said. " Iran will become the first nuclear country in the world towards which containment will not help, even if the containment is nuclear," Netanyahu said.

He stated that Israel watches Azerbaijan's success in the field of hydrocarbon development.
