Azerbaijani Ruling Party not Confident with Amendments Proposals in Election Code

Azerbaijan, Baku, 18 April / Trend corr. I.Alizadeh / The ruling Yeni Azerbaijan party (YAP) opposed the fact that the proposals to reduce the term for the pre-election campaign, consideration of appeals and financing of the pre-election campaign were not included into the project on amendments in the Election Code.

"We do not feel confident with the amendments in the Election Code," MP Siyavush Novruzov, Deputy Executive Secretary of YAP, stated Trend .

The Azerbaijani Government has held negotiations with the Venice Commission of Council of Europe for several years to improve the Election Code. The amendments and supplements to the Election Code were developed and submitted to Parliament. However, Government did not accept several proposals by the Venice Commission, in particular to change the framework of the election commissions. The opposition also does not agree with the amendments. The opposition members demand an election commission be formed on a parity basis with the participation of authorities and opposition representatives.

The ruling party has submitted its proposals to the Venice Commission of Council of Europe. " YAP considers it to be necessary to introduce amendments to the Election Code. We have other proposals as well. However, I do not wish to announce them at this stage," an official representative from YAP stated.

Novruzov stated that they would submit the Election Code proposals during the Parliamentary discussions.

YAP was founded in Nakhchivan in 1992. The all-nation leader, the late ex-President Heydar Aliyev was the Party's first Chairman. President Ilham Aliyev is the current chairman of the Party, which has been in power for 14 years.
