Azerbaijan, Baku, 18 April / corr. Trend G. Jabiyev/ The Oppositional Democratic Party of Azerbaijan (DPA) has announced that unification of Azerbaijani opposition parties is impossible. "I do not believe it at all as some opposition leaders of Azerbaijan are controlled from abroad and some - within the country," Gurban Mammadov, the activist of DPA said to Trend on 18 April.

The opposition parties of Azerbaijan are developing various opinions on nomination of a unified candidate from opposition for the presidential elections, which will be held on 15 Oct 2008. Arif Hajili, the head of Central Executive Administration of Musavat (Equality) party, also considers the nomination of a unified candidate from opposition to be impossible.

Mammadov refused to divulge the names of those leaders whom he considers to be controlled from abroad and within the country.

According to Mammadov, there is not any party leader in Azerbaijan who deals with classical opposition activities. "Opposition leaders are not going to quit their post and do not allow new powers to come to the arena. They should be exposed," Mammadov said.

The Right Wing DPA was founded in 1991 by Sardar Jalaloglu. The party stuck to the radical position until January 2007; however it decided to establish a dialogue with the Government in Jan 2007. As a protest, Rasul Guliyev, the former speaker of the parliament and his supporters turned down DPA and established the Open Society party.
