Georgia's former defense minister Irakli Okruashvili, sentenced to jail in his home country for bribery and extortion, has been granted political asylum in France, his lawyers said Wednesday, reported the AFP.
Lawyer Louis-Marie de Roux said the French refugee office was "receptive to the arguments of Okruashvili, whose situation risked getting worse in the event of an extradition to his country because of his opposition to Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili."
