Azerbaijan, Baku, 25 April / corr. Trend I. Alizade/ Changes will be made in the activities of Toponymy Commission dealing with re-naming of the settlements.

"The current charter of Toponymy Commission contradicts Azerbaijani laws," Arif Rahimzade, the chairman of Standing Parliament Commission on Regional Issues said in a meeting of the commission on 25 April.

The charter of Toponymy Commission was adopted by Milli Majlis (parliament) on 8 April 2000. A number of new laws have been passed since then, he said.

According to the new charter, the Toponymy Commission must follow rules of the Azerbaijani language while renaming the settlements. However, previously the historical names were given more preference.

According to the new charter, the composition of Toponymy Commission must be approved by the parliament. The Commission has highly appreciated the changes, and also proposed to bring these changes for discussion in the parliament.
