Dozens of people were believed to be dead and injured Monday after a passenger train derailed and crashed into another train in eastern China, the official news agency Xinhua reported.

The derailed train was travelling from Beijing to the port city of Qingdao when the accident occurred in Zibo in Shandong province, Xinhua said, citing witnesses and a government spokesman. Ten of the derailed train's carriages were sent into a ditch, it said.

The train that was hit was travelling from Yantai in Shandong to Xuzhou in neighbouring Jiangsu province.

Rescue workers were dispatched to the site, but they were not immediately able to give a number of dead and injured although witnesses and doctors said there were "heavy casualties."
