No Violations Occur During Transit of Cargo for Nuclear Power Station in Bushehr  through Azerbaijan: Valentin Sobolev

There were no violations during the transit through Azerbaijan of the Russian equipment for the nuclear power station in Bushehr. Valentin Sobolev, the acting secretary of Security Council of Russian Federation said to media after his meeting with his Iranian counterpart Said Jalili, the secretary of the Supreme Council for National Security of Islamic Republic of Iran, ITAR-TASS reported.

"Russia and Iran confirmed that the financing and the supply of equipment for the construction of nuclear power station in Bushehr will be carried out in time," said the head of the Russian delegation.

The cargo for the nuclear power station in Bushehr, transported from Russia to Iran, was detained in the customs point in Astara on the Azerbaijan-Iran border on 29 March. The cargo is reported to have been detained due to special permission not being obtained for its transit which is given by the Azerbaijani government.

"As Russia and Iran have been informed, there were no any violations," Sobolev said. "The relevant customs organizations and Foreign Ministry are taking relevant measures to regulate the situation," he said. Earlier the press secretary of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry Khazar Ibrahim said that 'Azerbaijan requested detailed information on the type of cargo for the nuclear power station, but also about whom it was meant for. The information about where the cargo is transported is not considered detailed information about the cargo, especially if sensitive material is involved," he said.

Commenting on this statement, the Russian Embassy in Azerbaijan stated that 'no one has officially appealed to them from the diplomatic mission regarding the detention of a vehicle with materials for the nuclear power station in Bushehr on the Azerbaijan-Iran border'. The Embassy also stated that it is confused about the detention of the equipment for the nuclear power station in Bushehr on the Azerbaijan-Iran border as the cargo went through all custom procedures in the Russian-Azerbaijan border in the north through to the south of this Trans-Caucasian republic.
