Azerbaijani Parliament Cancels Registration of Presidential Candidates with Cash Deposits

Azerbaijan, Baku, 2 June / corr. Trend I. Alizadeh/ The Parliament of Azerbaijan has canceled the system of registration of the presidential candidates by depositing cash. The discussions on the supplements and changes into the Election Code were continued in the meeting of the parliament on 2 June.

The draft to improve the Election Code was developed as a result of the discussions between the Azerbaijani government and Venice Commission of the Council of Europe. The Bill on Changes and Supplements to Election Code developed by the Azerbaijani government was positively assessed by the Venice Commission.

Earlier the presidential candidates, who could not collect necessary number of signatures, could get registered after paying a deposit of AZN333,000.

According to the changes and supplements to the Election Code, the pretenders can register only after they present the required umber of collected signatures to the Central Election Commission.

The Bill on Changes and Supplements to Election Code was passed by the parliament with 100 votes in favor, 3 - against and 1 abstaining.
