Azerbaijani Two Opposition Parties Cannot Unite

Azerbaijan, Baku, 4 June / Trend corr. J.Babayeva / The differences took place in the opposition National-Democratic Party of Azerbaijan (NDPA) regarding the unification with the Azadlig party. Some members of the party consider that the party should implement the independent activities, Oktay Khalili, Chairman of the Organizational Committee of the party to prepare to meeting, told Trend on 4 June.

Iskandar Hamidov, NDPA Chairman and former Internal Minister of Azerbaijan, stated that he would stop his political activity. Hamidov explained his resignation with the will to give the way to new trustful and talented man. At present, Khalili chairs the party.

According to Khalili, the issue regarding the unification of parties will be considered in the meeting instead of the all differences.

Khalili said the regional organizations of the party hold conferences and the date for the 4th meeting will be defined as a result of these conferences. "We are planning to hold the meeting in September," Khalili said.

The agenda of the conference is focused on the issue regarding participation in the upcoming presidential elections. "It is expected that NDPA will support a candidate from other party," Khalili stated.

An appeal was submitted to the Organizational Committee of the party to nominate the candidature of Shahin Agabayli, chief editor of the Milli yol newspaper in the upcoming presidential elections. The candidature of the chairman of Azadlig party may also be submitted for the presidential post," Khalili stated.
