Azerbaijan, Baku, 7 July / corr Trend K. Zarbaliyeva/ The officers of the Interior Ministry of Azerbaijan has revealed 70kg of drugs in a car in south of Azerbaijan.
The press service of the Interior Ministry said to Trend that Regional Department of the South region of the Central Department for Fight against Drugs and Police Department of Bilasuvar region of Azerbaijan have revealed and confiscated 70 kg of hashish in a car of VAZ-2106 brand owned by Ali Mammadov, resident of Ashagi Jurali village of Bilasuvar.
Mammadov and his passenger Afat Shirinov were detained. A case has been filed into the fact.
The CIS Statistics Committee said that the number of drug addiction related crimes in Azerbaijan has risen by 12% against the first half year of 2008, Belarus and Ukraine - 6%, Russia - 5% and Tajikistan - 2%. On the contrary, this indicator has dropped in Armenia - 49%.
During the last five months of 2008, the law enforcement agencies of withdrew over 550kg of drugs with 397kg - being hashish, 94 - opium, 36kg - marijuana and 23kg - heroin. However, many are doubtful of the amount of the drugs available in Azerbaijan as it has became international transit for drug trafficking.
