Azerbaijani Parliament Passes Law on Expanding Peacekeeping Contingent in Afghanistan
Azerbaijan, Baku, 2 October/ Trend , corr I. Alizade/ On 2 October, Azerbaijani parliament passed a law to double peacekeeping contingent in Afghanistan
A total of 45 Azerbaijani peacekeepers serve in the composition of International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). They carry out post-patrol service in Kabul.
A total of 95 MPs voted in favor, 1- against and 1 obtained.
President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev introduced draft law to parliament on adding one more platoon to Azerbaijani peacekeeping force in Afghanistan.
In 1997, a peacekeeping detachment was formed at the National Army of Azerbaijan. A peacekeeping battalion was later established. The number of Armed Forces of Azerbaijan in Iraq totalled 150 soldiers and 34 in Kosovo. The Azerbaijani soldiers controlled 18 villages in Kosovo. Over 400 Azerbaijani soldiers served in Kosovo. The Azerbaijani peacekeeping detachment in Kosovo operated within the Turkey's Armed Forces. There were 45 Azerbaijani peacekeepers in Afghanistan patrolling Kabul.
