Violations of Ethic and Legal Norms in Azerbaijani Press Become more Frequent – expert
Azerbaijan, Baku, 7 October / corr. Trend I.Alizade / The cases of violation of ethic and legal norms in Azerbaijani press have become more frequent.
"The cases of violation of ethic norms have become much more frequent," Jahangir Mammadli, head of chair of Baku state university, said to "Rules of journalists' civilized behavior in electoral systems" press-conference of the public union Social Prosperity and Researches, which was held in the press-centre of Trend Agency on 7 October.
He said that the legal norms in Azerbaijan are perceived better, "because all questions are indicated precisely and our people understand it well. However, there is an irresponsible attitude towards the question on what to do or not to do from the point of view of ethics".
Period of elections is considered the period of testing of press, mainly of TV, Mammadli said.
Electoral period has three stages and press should demonstrate attentive and responsible attitude towards this issue, including definition of potential candidate, their registration, agitation stage and day of voting. Early dissemination of information concerning the platform of candidates by journalists before the beginning of agitation stage could become the reason for refusal to register candidate. At the same time, the press following ethic and legal norms, should give positions of both sides in the articles prepared about any candidate.
Mammadli also said that he is dissatisfied with the debates of presidential candidates, which take place in the Public TV.
The presidential elections in Azerbaijan will be held on 15 October. A total of seven candidates will take part in the elections including Ilham Aliyev, chairman of Ruling New Azerbaijan Party, Igbal Agazade, chairman of opposition Umid (Hope) Party, Fazil Gazanfaroglu, chairman of Great Establishment Party, Gudrat Hasanguliyev, chairman of Unified Popular Front Party, Hafiz Hajiyev, chairman of Muasir Musavat Party, Fuad Aliyev, chairman of Liberal Democrat Party and independent candidate Gulamhuseyn Alibayli.
