Azerbaijani Opposition Parties Participating in Presidential Elections Likely to Establish Bloc

Azerbaijan, Baku, 18 October / Trend corr. A.Huseynbala / Fazil Gazanfaroglu, the chairman and presidential candidate of the opposition Great Establishment Party (GEP) in the presidential elections, does not exclude unification of some parties taking part in the elections in one bloc.

"First, corporative interests are important in a political struggle. If every party holds the same view, they can unite in any bloc," Gazanfaroglu, former presidential candidate, told Trend on 18 October.

Seven candidates were running for presidency at the 15 October presidential elections including Ilham Aliyev, chairman of Ruling New Azerbaijan Party, Igbal Agazade, chairman of opposition Umid (Hope) Party, Fazil Gazanfaroglu, chairman of Great Establishment Party, Gudrat Hasanguliyev, chairman of Unified Popular Front Party, Hafiz Hajiyev, chairman of Muasir Musavat Party, Fuad Aliyev, chairman of Liberal Democrat Party and independent candidate Gulamhuseyn Alibayli.

According to outline results, current President Ilham Aliyev, candidate of the country's governing party, won the majority of votes - 88.73%. Igbal Agazade won 2.78%, Fazil Gazanfaroglu - 2.40%, Gudrat Hasanguliyev - 2.22%, Gulamhuseyn Alibayli - 2.18%, Fuad Aliyev - 0.75% and Hafiz Hajiyev - 0.62%.

According to Gazanfaroglu, if a need arouses in a concrete situation and is useful, establishment of a bloc of parties participating in the elections should not be refused.

"It is difficult to speak about this matter now, because these candidates' outlook and attitude toward Azerbaijan's problems is different. Therefore, I do not believe, for instance, my outlook coincides with outlook of Igbal Agazade or Gudrat Hasanguliyev," the GEP chairman said.

The former presidential candidate said that it can be possible to hold a common position just in some tactic versions.

"If such a situation arouses, we will seek to take necessary steps for cooperation," Gazanfaroglu stressed.

"We do not intend to unite in a bloc with any political organization," Igbal Agazade, the former presidential candidate and chairman of the opposition Umid (Hope) Party told Trend

Elchin Mirzabayli, the deputy chairman of the Unified Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (UPFPA) considers possible to solve this matter after discussions.

"At present any discussion is not held on this matter. We can cooperate with political parties, which took part in the elections, whose political platforms coincide and hold unbiased position toward future of Azerbaijan, as well as have concrete programs," Mirzabayli said. The UPFPA deputy chairman hopes for definite advances in this direction.
