Azerbaijan, Baku, 23 October / Trend corr. A.Huseynbala/ There is a need to create a single focal point, uniting the opposition camp in Azerbaijan, said Eldar Namazov, the head of the public forum For Azerbaijan, which is part of the Opposition Cooperation Centre. "The new structure should attract famous people functioning in political parties, social organizations and non-governmental sector," Namazov said to Trend on 23 October.

The opposition cooperation centre is composed of block Azadlig (Azerbaijan Popular Front Party, Liberal Party, Citizen and Development Party), Musavat party and the public forum For Azerbaijan. In early September, these political organizations signed a joint declaration recognizing illegal the presidential election of 15 October and the power to result from the election.

Guarantee of the unity of forces who want democratic changes in Azerbaijan and working in this area must be the main principle of expansion of the Opposition Cooperation Centre, said Namazov.

"But when it comes to unification, there are some fundamental issues. In Azerbaijan, there are plenty of organizations calling themselves opposition and democratic. But the policy pursued by most of them does not conform to these principles," he said.

According to Namazov, unification requires accurate determination of the criteria so that expansion of the Centre was not artificial.

"I think a common strategy must be devised for the opposition. And the strategy must be linked to the future of the country and democratic changes. Our cooperation should be established only with the political movements that support this strategy," he said.
