Inauguration of Azerbaijan’s Newly-Elected President Held

Azerbaijan, Baku, 24 October / Trend , corr J.Babayeva / The inauguration of the re-elected President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev was held in Baku on 24 October.

The presidential oath taking ceremony took place in the central concert hall of Baku, the Heydar Aliyev Palace in the city center.

Azerbaijani President took an oath by swearing on the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Quran.

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, Chief of Russia's Presidential Administration Sergey Narishkin, Chief of Poland's Presidential Administration Peter Kovnatski, First Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey Jamil Chichek and Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Konstantin Yeliseyev are in attendance in the inauguration ceremony.

The Constitutional Court of Azerbaijan has upheld the results of the presidential election.

The presidential election was held in Azerbaijan on 15 October.

According to the results of the election, current President Ilham Aliyev, chairman of New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) won 88.73% of votes.

Igbal Agazade, chairman of opposition Umid (Hope) Party gained 2,86%, Fazil Gazanfaroglu, chairman of Great Establishment Party 2.47%, Gudrat Hasanguliyev, chairman of Unified Popular Front Party 2.28%, independent candidate Gulamhuseyn Alibayli 2.23%, Fuad Aliyev, chairman of Liberal Democrat Party 0.78% and Hafiz Hajiyev, chairman of Muasir Musavat Party 0.65%.

Ilham Aliyev was born on 24 December 1961 in Baku in a family of world renowned politician Heydar Ailyev. In 1982 he graduated the Moscow State University of International Relations (MSUIR) and in 1985 the postgraduate study.

He taught at the MSUIR from 1985 to 1990. From 1991 to 1994 he was involved in business and was the director general of a commercial company in Moscow.

In 1994 he was appointed the vise-president, and later the first vise-president of the State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SOCAR).

On 4 August 2003 he was appointed the Prime minister of Azerbaijan. Aliyev was elected member of Parliament of two convocations. Since 1997 he is the President of the National Olympic Committee.

In October 2003 he was elected the President of Azerbaijan for the first term.
